MISSION STATEMENT
Presentation
I. The "Liberassociazione Pavel Muratov"/"Centro Internazionale di Studi 'Pavel Muratov'" /” The Pavel Muratov International Centre of Studies”(henceforth referred to simply as the “Centre”) is a non-profit cultural association founded in 2012 in Rome, where it has its registered office, by Xenia Muratova, Professor Emerita of Art History at French universities and descendant of the Russian writer Pavel Muratov. The co-founders are: the artist Georges de Canino and professors Rita Giuliani and Valentino Pace. The Governing Committee and the Scientific Committee of the Centre are composed of European and American art and literary historians, philologists, writers, artists, and patrons.
II. The main objective of the Centre is the preservation, augmentation, and dissemination, in Russia, Europe, North America, and other countries, of the work of the art historian, writer, critic, and military historian Pavel Muratov (1881-1950) and of his contemporaries, representatives of Russian culture of the beginning of the 20th century, the so-called "Silver Age". Muratov's name is of fundamental importance in the context of cultural relations between Italy and Russia. The activity of the Centre aims at fostering a greater knowledge and understanding of Russian culture in Italy and of Italian culture in Russia, and of the interaction of both cultures among scholars, connoisseurs, and students of interdisciplinary and intercultural relations. The Centre sponsors events, conferences and symposia, and publications dealing with the historic and artistic relations between the two countries, and aims to promote international awareness of the figure of Muratov, a citizen of the world, and a “Renaissance man” of a multifaceted personality with innumerable skills, attentive to the study, dissemination and enhancement of the cultural heritage, especially of Italy and Russia, but also of other geographical areas and ancient civilizations. Muratov's role as an art historian, writer, and European intellectual of the twentieth century allows for the development of highly diverse initiatives in the various fields of art, culture and history.
In Russia, Pavel Muratov was a discriminating and erudite scholar and promoter of Italian culture. His magisterial three-volume book Obrazy Italii/ Immagini dell’Italia/ Evocations of Italy (1911-1912) had a tremendous and lasting influence on Russian letters, art, scholarship, and curatorial practice. His translations into Russian of Italian Renaissance novellas and of the writings on Italy of the British Aesthetes had a profound impact on the development of Russian modernist poetry and literary practice. The Centre chose Rome, where Muratov lived for many years, as its seat. Moreover, an important part of Muratov's archives that testify to his activity in Italy (his writings for the publishing house "Valori plastici", his correspondence with Ugo Ojetti, Mario Broglio, Bernard Berenson, and other prominent cultural figures) is preserved in the Historical Fund of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome.
Pavel Muratov did not only present Italian culture, and specifically the Italian Renaissance, to the Russian public. Another of his visionary scholarly contributions was his valorization of the Russian icon as a historical and aesthetic phenomenon. In his writings on this topic, as well as in his numerous monographs and studies of Medieval and Byzantine Russian art, Muratov investigates aesthetic phenomena within their historical context.
Muratov’s interest in contemporary art made important contributions to the discovery and reception of modern art movements in Russia. For instance, his is one of the first monographs on Cézanne and the first monograph on Petr Končalovskij. His philosophy of art, informed by encyclopedic study of the theoretical and philosophical writings on aesthetics, emphasized the essential anthropomorphism and classical ideal of European figurative culture.
In the Russian cultural context of his time, Muratov's work stands out for the richness of its insights, the penetration of his intellect, and the range of his literary and scholarly activities, which included curatorial and archival work. The extraordinary flowering of Russian culture at the beginning of the 20th century, the First World War, the Russian Revolution, the cultural reforms of the first post-revolutionary years, life in emigration, the Second World War - all crucial and tragic events of the first half of the 20th century - were experienced by Muratov as a protagonist, a direct observer, and an astute judge.
History itself occupies an important place in his work, specifically: the history of the First and Second World Wars and the Caucasian wars, as Muratov was also a military historian, essayist, and journalist attentive to the problems of the contemporary world.
In the area of belles lettres, Muratov was the author of novels and short stories, a master in the art of the prose essay and literary criticism, and the author of dramas and comedies. He was a prolific translator, being the first to translate into Russian the writings of Walter Pater (1908, 1916), Beckford (1912), Vernon Lee (1914-1915), Italian novelists of the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries (1912-1913), Gérard de Nerval (1912), Prosper Mérimée (1913), Anatole France, Emily Brontë, and Bernhard Berenson (1914, 1923).
Muratov's oeuvre encompasses over three thousand titles, most of which still remain unknown or forgotten. "Paul Pavlovich Muratov … shows just how brilliant somebody can be and still be a forgotten man,” so begins chapter devoted to Muratov by the Anglo-Australian writer Clive James in his book Cultural Amnesia. Necessary Memories from History and the Arts (London, 2007). Muratov’s learned, original, and stylistically gifted work has been forgotten because he was dislodged from the cultural context of Silver Age Russia by politics and history, was ostracized in the USSR, and struggled to establish himself and his work in emigration since 1922.
III. The Pavel Muratov International Centre has the following objectives:
1. The full publication and translation of Muratov's work (from Russian, Italian, French and English into other languages).
2. The implementation of the WEB site dedicated to him, closed after the death of Xenia Muratova (2019) and now restored. https://www.pavelmuratovcentre.org/pavel-muratov
3. The study of Russian, Italian, French, English, Irish, German, and American archives that contain materials relating to Muratov's life and work. The publication of archival materials and his bibliography in the various language of his researchers, collaborators, and interlocutors. Preparation of a bibliography of posthumous editions of Muratov's work, of translations of his works into other languages, and of critical studies dedicated to him.
4. Scientific collaboration with other scholarly and cultural institutions, centres and foundations dealing with the artistic and cultural relations between Italy and Russia (Academy of Fine Arts, Moscow; CSAR, Venice; the House of Russian Emigration, Moscow and other cultural Centres), with the history of medieval and modern art (AISAME; Centre for the History of the Miniature; Roberto Longhi Foundation; Bibliotheca Hertziana, Rome; Kunsthistorisches Institut, Florence; Villa I Tatti, Florence and other scientific Centres), and 20th-century Russian literature (Centro Studi Vjačeslav Ivanov, Rome; Slavistics Departments of Italian Universities; the Amherst College Center for Russian Culture; and other institutions).
5. The organization of conferences, conventions, exhibitions, round tables, meetings, film screenings, readings of excerpts from Muratov's works, as part of a series of periodic meetings -- the "Muratovian Readings"-- in Italy, Russia, Western Europe, and the United States.
6. Researching and documenting a cultural history of "Russkij Rim" - "Russian Rome".
7. Establishing the annual Pavel Muratov Prize for excellent scholarly contributions by young and senior scholars.
8. An unrealized but cherished objective of Xenia Muratova was to establish the Pavel Muratov Home Museum in Rome, displaying his extensive art collection, voluminous library, artifacts, and archives in a reconstruction of the Muratov home as a cultural and socio-historical “document” of the Russian Silver Age. In its scope and aesthetic and scholarly excellence, the Muratov collection is comparable to that of Mario Paz, now housed in the Mario Praz Museum at the Palazzo Primoli in Rome. It is envisioned that the Pavel Muratov Home Museum would be affiliated with an established museum to secure its scholarly integrity, and would house, among other artifacts, the following: Russian and French books from the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially books on Napoleon and military history; art magazines and journals, Russian, French, Italian, and British, from the early 20th century; Russian furniture and objects from the Imperial Age; collections of Russian and French porcelain and glassware of the 18th-19th centuries; 19th-early 20th century prints, works on paper, and paintings; Russian icons.
As a sort of “preview” of the activity of the Pavel Muratov Centre, the exhibition Pavel Muratov --Man of Silver Age was organized in 2008 in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The exhibition materials, edited by G. V. Vzdornov and X. M. Muratova, were published in a book entitled The Return of Muratov (Moscow: Indrik Publishers ), which was presented also in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow at the end of 2008. In 2009 in Lausanne there was a symposium dedicated to Russian culture in the era of revolutions, where X. M. Muratova delivered an extensive report on P. P. Muratov’s work in emigration. In 2010 X. M. Muratova delivered a lecture entitled "Pavel Muratov and the Discovery of the Russian Icon" at the Louvre Museum in Paris in connection with the exhibition Holy Russia. In 2011 due to the exchange of the masterpieces of religious painting between Florence and Moscow, Xenia Muratova published a volume of scholarly articles investigating the role of P. Muratov in the history of the discovery, research, and distribution of the Medieval Russian icon.

IV. Activities of the Centre in the years 2012-2021
2012
•Workshop dedicated to the life and work of Pavel Muratov, House of Russian Emigration, Moscow. Participation of members of the Centre in scholarly meetings on the work of Muratov (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Turin).
•Publication of a series of essays by Muratov from the years 1920-1930 that appeared in the Parisian Russian emigré newspaper "Vozroždenie" (D. Sarab'janov, X. Muratova, in the journal "Naše Nasledie", no. 104, pp. 50-73).
•Preparation for the publication of studies on the work of Pavel Muratov (materials of the First Muratovian Readings, organized in Moscow in 2008 on the occasion of the first, comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the writer).
• Research in the archives of Rome, Paris and London.
•A series of interviews for the press and television (in Russia and the USA).
2013
•Organization in Rome, in collaboration with the Association "Friends of the Museums of Rome" and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, of a Round Table and a photographic exhibition dedicated to the work of Pavel Muratov. The Round Table took place on October 21, 2013.
•Preparation of several publications related to Muratov's work (for the journal "Naše nasledie"; for the series "Literaturnye pamjatniki").
•Magazine publication ("Naše nasledie", no. 108, pp. 104-127) of a series of Muratov's essays from the 1920s-1930s written in emigration and published in Paris in the newspaper "Vozroždenie".
2014
•February 26: meeting of the Centre in Rome;
•Participation of members of the Centre in scholarly meetings dedicated to the work of P. Muratov held in Lyon, Telč, Paris, Portland, OR);
•Summer: participation in the Exhibition of Russian painting in Bordighera "The Russian Venus" (X. Muratova). In the catalog of the exhibition (edited by X. Muratova, Cinisello Balsamo, Silvana editoriale) the role of Muratov as art critic and historian of contemporary art is highlighted.
Organization of the meeting "Writer at War" dedicated to Muratov in the residence of the Ambassador of Russia to France in Paris (September 25, 2014): reading of memoirs about his participation in the First World War published by Muratov in "Vozroždenie" (presentation: X. Muratova; texts by Muratov read by Prince Dmitry Šachovskoj). Exhibition of Muratov's works. Exhibition of photographs and objects from the Muratov's family collection.
October 31: literary and musical evening dedicated to the reading of excerpts from Muratov's Images of Italy in Russian and Italian (Theatre of Villa Abamelek (residence of the Ambassador of Russia in Italy) in Rome. Muratov's texts are read by Francesca Benedetti and Ivan Melkumian.
• October 27: Publication of material by Paolo Brogi in the "Corriere della sera" (p. 19) dedicated to the figure of Muratov and the activities of the International Centre for Pavel Muratov Studies.
2015

• July-August: participation of the Centre in the exhibition of 20th century Russian painting "La Russie inconnue" in Montecarlo. The exhibition catalogue by Xenia Muratova (500 p., more than 600 ill., Cinisello Balsamo, Silvana editoriale) highlights the role of Muratov as art critic and historian of contemporary art.
•October: participation in the organization of an exhibition and conference dedicated to Michel Grinberg-Vinaver at the House of Russian Emigration, Moscow. Lecture by Xenia Muratova on Muratov's role as an expert on icon painting, his connection with the antiquarian gallery "A la Vieille Russie" (Paris, New York), and the story of his friendship with Leon Grinberg.
•October: presentation of the volume "Immagini d'Italia in Russia" (Moscow, House of Russian Emigration) with the participation of Andrej Šiškin, Xenia Muratova, Bianca Sulpasso and other members of the Centre.
• November: Xenia Muratova's visit to Florence. Meetings with the director of the Gabinetto Vieusseux, Gloria Manghetti, and plans for the future organization of an exhibition dedicated to Pavel Muratov at the Gabinetto in Palazzo Strozzi and the publication of materials on Muratov's work in the Annals of the Gabinetto Vieusseux.
•Publication in a Russian magazine of the essay “La Roma dell'inizio del XX sec. nello specchio di Immagini dell'Italia ("Imagologija i komparativistika. Imagology and Comparative Studies", no. 1 (3) 2015) (R. Giuliani). The essay was also published in an Italian version in 2016.
2016
• Work commences on the WEB site of the Pavel Muratov Centre.
• January: publication of Irina Vaganova's book Da Firenze a Jaroslavl' (Jaroslavl, 2016), a chapter of which is dedicated to Muratov and his connection with these two cities.
•February: participation of X. Muratova in the activities of the Circolo Russistico Romano organized by Rita Giuliani (University of Rome "Sapienza") with the lecture "Paolo Muratov and contemporary art".
• April: research in the archives of Poltava (initiative of Vladimir Zubkovskij) on the life of the Muratov family in this city in the 1890s. Unfortunately, the research showed the destruction of most of the personal documents in the archives of Poltava during the revolution of 1917 and the Civil War.
• Jean-Claude Marcadé translates Muratov's essay on the Ščukin Collection (1908) into French for the catalog of the exhibition on the Ščukin Collection organized at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris in October 2016 (edited by Anne Baldassari).
• April-May: signing of contract with Adelphi publishing house (Milan, Italy) to edit and translate Muratov's Obrazy Italii into Italian (translator Alessandro Romano, editor Rita Giuliani).
• May: presentation of the French version of X. Muratova La Russia sconosciuta at the Artcurial Art Centre in Paris.
•June: discussion of X. Muratova’s La Russia sconosciuta on Radio-Courtoisie with the participation of the author.
•Autumn: Exhibition "Piranesi before and after", Moscow, Museum of Fine Arts. Participation of members of the Centre, in particular Federica Rossi, in the organization of the exhibition and the conception of the catalog. Parallels between Muratov's novel Egeria and Russian architecture of the 1920s.
•September: publication of the book by Oleg Tarasov Il Liberty e le icone antiche. From cult object to masterpiece (Moscow, Indrik, 2016), a chapter of which analyzes the role of Muratov and his aesthetic concepts in the history of the "discovery" of the Russian icon.
• October: Xenia Muratova's trip to Moscow: meetings with the director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Moscow, Olga Strada, and the Director of the Department of Art History at Moscow's Lomonosov University, Ivan Tučkov: plans to organize a series of Muratovian events at Moscow University in 2017-2018. Meeting with the director of the House of Russian Emigration, Viktor Moskvin: project of collaboration with the Muratov Centre.
Participation of members of the Centre (I. Buzckowska, X. Muratova) in the broadcast of Radio Courtoisie dedicated to the opening of the exhibition of the Ščukin Collection in Paris: the role of Muratov in the study of this collection is emphasized by the organizers of the exhibition.
November: participation of some members of the Centre at the International Congress of ASEEES; a whole session of the Congress is dedicated to Muratov (presentations by L. Lenček, X. Muratova, J. Koguciuk).
•November: Lena Lenček presents to the Centre a part of her translation of Obrazy Italii in English.

The website is given highest priority with the objective of collecting and collating books, publications, manuscripts, photographic materials, typewritten texts, documents, and archives, and to disseminate knowledge of the work of Muratov and his contemporaries through a clear, user-friendly, accurate, and reliable research tool. Preliminary implementation of project of constructing the website with documents, texts and pictures.
• February: participation of X. Muratova at the conference organized in Paris in connection with the exhibition of the Ščukin collection at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.
Ongoing translation of Images of Italy into Italian for the publishing house Adelphi.
Preparation for printing materials of the first two "Muratovian Readings" (2008, 2013) at the Moscow University publishing house. Unfortunately, the untimely death of Prof. Tučkov temporarily delayed their publication.
Participation of X. Muratova in the catalog of the exhibition on Giorgio De Chirico at the Tret'jakov Gallery, Moscow (text by T. Goriaceva on De Chirico's Russian relations and, in particular, on his relations with Pavel Muratov).
Participation in the making of documentary films on M. Dobužinskij and N. Okunev for the Russian television channel "Kultura", Moscow, in which texts and materials by Muratov were used.

Lopuchova, Moscow, LUM).
•April: study conference on the Russian literary canon (University of Rome "Sapienza"), with a paper on Pavel Muratov, on the inertia of the literary canon (R. Giuliani).
2019
• Publication in the journal "Izvestija Rossijskoj akademii nauk. Serija literatury i jazyka" (78 (2019), no. 2) of the text of R. Giuliani's lecture on Muratov at the Conference on the Russian Literary Canon.
•May 13: Rita Giuliani's participation in the Conference "Cornici. I Castelli Romani tra Ottocento e Novecento" (Frames. Roman Castles between the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries), with the paper "Viaggiatori russi ai Castelli Romani all'alba del XX secolo" (Russian travelers to Roman Castles at the beginning of the Twentieth Century). "Images of Italy" by Pavel Muratov (Frascati).
• November: the death of Xenia Muratova, the “heart and soul" and President of the Centre.
•December: the first volume of Immagini dell'Italia (Images of Italy) was published in Italian, edited by Rita Giuliani, who also wrote the afterword (pp. 439-461, ILL), translated by Alessandro Romano, with an essay by Katja Petrowskaja. The volume (478 p.) has excellent press coverage and sales success.
2020
• January: R. Giuliani begins the collection and editing of the Proceedings of the "Third Muratovian Readings" for publication. The volume, edited by Rita Giuliani, is projected to celebrate the figure of Xenia Muratova and her multifaceted work.
• Presentation in Rome (Libreria ELI) of the first volume of Immagini dell'Italia.
•April 17: publication in Polish of the afterword by R. Giuliani to the first volume of Immagini dell'Italia: "Obrazy Włoch". Posłowie in the magazine "Zeszyty Literackie".
• May: the General Assembly appoints Professor Rita Giuliani, (University "Sapienza", Rome), co-founder of the Centre, as the new President of the Centre, and members of the Advisory Board, Professors Lena Lenček (Reed College, Portland, Oregon), Marina Lopuchova (MGU University, Moscow), Nadja Podzemskaja (ITEM, CNRS-ENS, Paris) and Valentino Pace (University of Udine).

Future Undertakings:
Among the initiatives and project undertaken by Xenia Muratova are the following:
• the exhibition "Around Pavel Muratov and Roberto Longhi: Russian and Italian Art in Italy in the Years 1920-1930";
•the preparation for printing the memories and stories of Evgenija Muratova-Paganuzzi, Pavel Muratov's first wife.
VI. Reception of the Work of the Centre:
The Centre's projects have met with considerable enthusiasm among important personalities of cultural life in Russia, Italy and France and have been received with interest and goodwill at the ministerial and institutional levels.
However, for the realization and development of its initiatives, the International Centre for Studies 'Pavel Muratov' needs collaborative encouragement, active collaboration, and financial support.
The President and the Council of the Centre will be infinitely grateful to all those individuals and institutions, who would like to support and sponsor the activities of the Centre.
